Image title The Harrowing of Hell

Print technique Lino Cut

Size 50 x 60 cm approx

Price Framed £250 Unframed £195

This print was inspired by Medieval alabaster carvings of the same
title - several of which are in existence. I am intrigued by the
medieval personification of Death and that Heaven and Hell are real
places as was believed in that period. Although most of my work is
inspired by medieval art and belief I like to bring modern elements
and details into the images.

Image title Dom Alfonso's Boys

Print technique Reduction Woodcut

Size 21x 29 cm approx

Price
£150 framed £120 unframed

This image is based on the true story of Pedro I of Portugal and his
lover Inés de Castro. She was a lady in waiting to Pedro's wife and
Pedro and Inés started an affair which bore children. At that time
Pedro was still uncrowned and his father Dom Alfonso IV banished Inés
from court. When Pedro continued the relationship after his wife's
death Alfonso had three noblemen kill her. When Pedro became King he
had the noblemen executed and had Inés' body disinterred and crowned
beside him. The story says that he made the people at the coronation
kiss her hand as respect to their queen. Pedro and Inés are buried feet
to feet at Alcobaça in Portugal so that when they sit up on judgement
day the first thing they will see is each other.

Image title Waiting for a Princess

Print technique Monoprint (variations available)

Size 21 x 30 cm approx

Price £130 Framed £105 unframed

When I made this print I was thinking about the story of The Princess
and the Pea. I love fairy tales and the dark horror that is contained
within them. The fact that we are read these stories of child abuse,
neglect, poisonings and murder from a very young age is something that
I find brilliantly bizarre. Even quite normal seeming tales like this
one have a rather chilling edge - the poor soaked girl turning up at a
castle for shelter and being put through this weird bedding ritual by
the queen- what does it all mean? The print was originally going to
have some representation of the Princess in it but I thought it much
better to stuff the pea in the prince's mouth and make him sit there and wait for a while longer.
