There is a great exhibition in the Concourse Gallery of Solent University at the moment.
Called Happy Birthday Edward Lear it is a celebration by around 40 illustrators, including Glen Baxter, Peter Blegvad, Geoff Grandfield, Times cartoonist Morten Mørland, Simon Pemberton, John Vernon Lord and Vaughan Oliver, of the work of Edward Lear who celebrates his bicentenary this year. It features all sorts of work and there is some really nice printmaking on show.
The concourse gallery is in the main entrance of the Michael Andrews Building of Solent University, East Park Terrace, Southampton.
The SWE annual exhibition is always a delight. It’s amazing to see the huge variety of wood engraving that’s being made in the UK and abroad at the moment. Some works are just boggling in their tininess and intricacy. Also it seems that wood engravers have a slightly quirky sense of humour and of the absurd – so there’s always something to have a giggle at. As always the show travels around the country and from 24 Nov – 20 Jan it will be in residence at Victoria Art Gallery, Bath www.victoriagal.org.uk
This show a must for any fan of printmaking. All works are for sale and can be supplied before Christmas so it makes for a perfect present buying opportunity.
At the end of January the show will be back at its home in the Bankside, London.
