Recently we caught up with Red Hot Press member Linn O’ Carroll who has recently completed the Foundation in Printmaking at Red Hot Press as she was preparing for a solo exhibition.
My love of printmaking began whilst studying at Southampton Art College in the 80s, which is now Solent University. I was studying Graphic Design & Production but a module in Fine Art Printmaking with 2 wonderful tutors, Jim Sellars and Mike Griffiths had me hooked…Jim, who was head of department took me aside one day and said ‘you are a printmaker…you are on the wrong course…’
So many years later, after working as a designer/art director in London, I gave it all up to study at Camberwell School of Arts on the MA Fine Art Printmaking. I was then awarded Printmaker in Residence at Kensington and Chelsea College.
For the last 20 years I have been practicing as an artist/educator working across Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. In 2014, I enrolled at Red Hot Press on the Foundation in Printmaking to learn new printmaking skills and processes and to have access to their facilities. I was particularly keen to explore new paths in my own practice, forge new connections, collaboration and redefine the ways printmaking is used in the gallery environment.
I have used my time at Red Hot Press to experiment with multi-process methods; monoprinting, drypoint and collagraphs. The freedom of exploring and adapting methods and redefining monoprinting approaches is very exciting.
Over the next 6 months I am undertaking a residency in Cornwall throughout June/July 2015 called ‘The Quiet House’. I will be working on an installation using a ruin which is an old dynamite store for Cape Cornwall mining area using drawing and time-lapse film. I have also been invited to partake in MOMENTUM Somerset Arts Weeks, exhibiting at the Musgrove Hospital, Taunton Sept-Nov 2015. My work is also featured in a forthcoming exhibition ‘Camberwell 3’, which is a printmaking/mixed media show at the L’Artishe gallery in Swanage, Dorset (November & December).
Whilst working at the Red Hot Press, I have exhibited prints produced in the studio as part of The Plant Project, at the Young Gallery, and L’Artishe latest show of artists who use printmaking and books. I will also be exhibiting at Mettricks Tea and Coffee House in Southampton as part of the Red Hot Press Foundation touring show.
Printmaking is an area where a novice and an experienced artist/printmaker can continually learn, explore and develop their practice. It is particularly exciting to my work, as the ‘happy accident’ and how this plays out in the printmaking process is the USP of printmaking! The wonder of capturing ideas, drawings, a body of work; the multi-processes and the limitless possibilities continue to inspire me.
The Foundation in Printmaking at Red Hot Press has helped ‘permit my creative development’. Whilst having previous experience and an MA, the tutors at Red Hot Press understood my desire to keep being ‘curious…and curiouser…’
